Stumbled across this amusing ode to death whilst browsing my Facebook Memories feature this morning. A friend informed me that it was taken from the above book in her collection, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwartz available here.
There are rumours that the song dated back as far as 1810 and connected to British soldiers in the Crimean War (1853–1856). During World War I (1914–1918), it was sung by American and British soldiers. The macabre yet humorous song was published in various World War I songbooks of the 1920s.
It is a popular children’s song to the present day.
